HISTORY OF THE SRI LANKA HEART ASSOCIATION

The Sri Lanka Heart Association came into being after an informal meeting at the residence of Dr.G.R.Handy in 1969. Those present were Dr.N.J.Walloopillai, Dr.Theva A.Buell, Dr.S.J.Stephen and Dr.A.T.W.P.Jayawardene. Dr.Handy was elected as the first president and held office till 1972 when Dr.Walloopillai took over.

On 1St April 1972 with Dr.Walloopillai in the chair the Sri Lanka Heart Association was officially formed at the Navarangala Hall.

In 1988 the Heart Association was registered as a Company when the following served as subscribers:-.

The Constitution of the Sri Lanka Heart Association was formally adopted..

In 1994 Dr.Theva a.Buell was elected as President of the Association He passed away in 1996 and Dr.S.J.Stephen assumed duties as President with a new set of Office bearers.

Our logo which has the Sri Lankan Lion carrying the Sword needed the authority of Her Excellency the President before it could be patented. The Council appointed Dr.Jayawardene to organise this and it was successfully completed .H.E Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaratunge agreed to be the Patron of the Association as well.His Excellency Mahinda Rajapakse is the present Patron

The Heart Asociation is a member of the World Heart Federation, the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology and is one of the founder members of the SAARC Cardiac Society.

Dr.P.N.Thenabadu was elected as President in 2008 and in 2010 Dr.W.S.Santharaj took over

The Sri Lanka Heart Association is an Approved Charity ref. Government gazette of 2nd march 1973 of section 16A, ACF No.6 1963.
