Children’s Heart Surgery Projects
Many children await heart surgery for congenital heart diseases in Sri Lanka. These surgeries are done free of charge in government hospitals but at present there are only two such cardiothoracic units for the entire country, one each in Colombo and Galle, where both adult and children’s cardiothoracic surgeries are done. The waiting lists for cardiac surgery at these centres therefore expectedly run in to several years.
Several organizations have come forward to financially assist needy children to get their heart surgeries done in the private sector hospitals. Cost of such surgery is between SLR 250,000 to 400,000. In most cases the President’s Fund donates about half the cost and the balance is funded by these organizations.

Children’s Heart Project
This project was started by a group of Cardiologists including Dr Jeremy Torstveit and Dr Dudley Halpe from Phoenix, Arizona, USA and Dr P N Thenabadu and Dr Stephen. The project has donated many equipment, medical supplies and cardiac catheters for paediatric use to the Cardiology Unit at NHSL. Additionally the USA team visits the NHSL and performs cardiac surgeries free of charge.
